Make Or Break: Chapter 2 – Meet & Greet

I finally arrived to Newbrey with Rhena and my daughter. It was a long drive from EC to here, I was happy that I got to drive there with my car. It was a gift from my grandpa. My dad told my grandpa that he shouldn’t do that cause now my cousins would want a car from him when they graduated from high school too. He’s hoping they’ll forget but I doubt they will. Mariah and Kimora both have sharp memories.

Newbrey is a nice looking college town, I admired its beauty as I drove to my new home. It’s a very clean town and I guess there’s a lot of work to keep it in tip top shape. The town was almost too perfect to be honest. My dad drove the moving van so he could help me move in. He said the town still looks the same from when he once attended NU however The Grotto is now a bar, the coffee shop is more colorful and the bowling alley has more to do. There’s also a film school in town now. My dad almost wanted to stay.

I rented out one of the student houses and the location was perfect. It was next to the daycare where Amora will be going to while I’m in class. There was a park near by to and it was also close to Rhena’s dorm. It had 4 bedrooms so I placed an ad for roommates before I moved in. I had to mention that a toddler would be living there and I figure I wouldn’t get much of a bite.

Before placing my ad so did see an ad place by a single mother looking for another single mother as a roommate. However the ad was already answered. She told me that she wished she had room for another single mother but we should set up play dates for our kids. I told her that would be cool. I’m happy that Amora will be making some new friends too.

I eventually did get a bite on my ad. Luckily my uncle Devin and his secret girlfriend Nicole were looking for a place together. They both had full scholarships that offer to pay for room and board, however they didn’t like the rules of the co-ed dorms. Guys and girls couldn’t sleep in each other’s room, the curfew was midnight and there are nightly room checks. They didn’t mind Amora and they both liked kids. I was happy to have family around me, I won’t feel so alone.

Devin made me promise to not let my grandpa that him and Nicole were together. Their parents are kinda dating and they might flip out. He mention is was originally a secret cause Nicole wasn’t allow to date. They been together since they were 16. Now that their parents are seeing each other, they felt it was best to keep it a secret.

I wonder what are they gonna do if their parents get serious and get married. My grandpa mention to me that he always could see himself settling down with Nakia if he played his cards right.

My aunt Echo needed a place too. She had a roommate but they didn’t get along. Echo moved into town a month before Devin, Nicole and I did. Devin and Nicole are close to Echo and suggested she should move in. I really haven’t talked to Echo before but Devin vouched for her so I guess it was okay.  He warned that Echo can be a little odd but she’s harmless.

Echo said her mom once ran a in home daycare and she’s use to being around little kids. Echo suggest they I should still look for a 4th roommate, she doesn’t require sleep. She mainly need a place to eat and relax at. I figure she could still use the room to have privacy but Echo plans on entertaining guys at their place. She doesn’t feel right bringing strange men around a small child. I’m glad that she feels that way cause that’s one of my concerns.

Devin told me that he’ll find another roommate. I would just have to focus on moving in. The last 2 weeks of summer flew by and before I knew it the last day of summer had arrive. However I was curious about where is the extra roommate at. School starts tomorrow so I figure I should ask Devin about it. He said he found one but he has been kinda vague about this person. All he could tell me was the person’s name was Tony. I kinda didn’t want a male moving in..

“Oh that Tony person will be moving in today. There’s been some issues with Tony with the move so that’s why they won’t be here until today. I guess I should have told ya that, huh?”

“Yeah but this Tony person, they don’t happen to be a guy? Cause I kinda have some concern about that. I guess I should mention that I wanted another female. But if this Tony person is guy, we can figure something out.”

“Oh… I probably should had thought of that but I’m pretty sure this Tony person is a female. I mean they texted like a girl. They spelled Tony with an I. I’m sorry Alyssa, I forgot about Amora..”

“It’s okay Devin. Like I said, we will figure something out.”

I haven’t been to the school’s daycare just yet. Today was the last day to register Amora and I know that I shouldn’t be waiting until the last second to do these type of things. I just been so busy settling in and get familiar with the town. I made sure I had the check for the first year. I almost flipped out when I couldn’t find it. I thought I may of left it in EC but I did find it thank goodness.

I met with Francis Parks, she was outside with one of the toddlers. I told her who I was and that I needed to register my daughter. She was happy to me and greeted me. She seems very nice and I think I can trust my daughter with her. She’s older lady so I figure she’s experienced with childcare.

“It’s nice to meet you Alyssa. I was wondering when you would be showing up. I was told that I would have 4 children in my care this year. Are you all settle in now?”

“Yes I am. I’m sorry about registering this late. I just been so busy with settling in and try to get Amora settled too. The first week was kinda hard for her but she’s adjusting now.”

“It’s fine Alyssa, I understand. This is a big adjustment for you and your daughter. I admire the fact that you brought your child with you. NU opened this daycare 6 years ago to help students who have children. We only take in children from the ages 12 months to 3 years. I should go over the ground rules with you. I will only be looking after your daughter for academic reasons. You are not allowed to use me if you wanted to go out and party or go on a hot date. All parents must submit their class schedules so I can make copies and be insure that I am watching your child while you attend school. As for studying, I have a small studying area if you need to study. Unfortunately I haven’t had a room built for the study hall, the study area is the open and it can be noisy if other children there. I do take them outside if the weather permits it. Hopefully by the next semester, the study room will be built.  I do offer my personal living space for studying if it’s too noisy.”

“I figure you would only watch the kids only for school stuff. So you actually live here too? Is it only just you watching the kids? Are there any other babysitting services if I just need a small break? I’m sorry if I’m asking too many questions.”

“It’s fine but yes I do live here. I’m on call 24 hours a day. The daycare is opened from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, I go to the town over to see my 2 young girls. For the last 6 years it’s just been me but this year I have a helper. A part time film student who’s in need of some extra cash. She has some childcare experience. I do more than just watch the children but I teach the children things as well. I worked as a preschool teacher for 15 years prior to accepting the job here. I like to think of this daycare more like a preschool. And yes there are other babysitting services from students who need extra cash. This evening will be a meet and greet at the student center, you can drop Amora off once you register her. I consider the meet and greet an academic reason. You should get familiar with the campus, your professors and your peers.”

“Oh really? I was going to ask you about meet and greet. Well I’m ready to register Amora if you are.”

“Of course, let’s on inside so you can fill out the paperwork. It’s really just one form. Did you bring your class schedule?”

“Perfect, I’ll have my helper make a copy of it.”

It didn’t take long to get Amora registered. Francis told me I could stick around for a bit to let Amora get familiar with the place. I took Amora so she could play on the rocket ship that she kept pointing at. So far Amora likes the place but she may react differently if I’m not around.

“We gotta go home now. We can come back later, okay?”

“You’ll get to play her later. We gotta go meet up with your Auntie Rhena at the park.”

“Okay well I’m gonna leave you and you will be all by yourself.”

“Bye, bye!”

“Oh come on. You’ll like the park.”

After Amora stop throwing a fit, we headed to the park up the street from us. Amora likes riding in her stroller. It was a nice day and felt like we should just walk there instead of driving. I think Amora and I are gonna do just fine here. While I’m in class, she’ll being learning things too. Francis said she thinks of the daycare being more as a preschool. I did mention that Amora isn’t potty trained yet but Francis said she didn’t mind that. She will help out potty training when it comes to that time.

It wasn’t long before Rhena shown up at the park. I haven’t seen Rhena since we first came to Newbrey. We both had been so busy with settling in. We haven’t hung out one last time before school starts.

 “What’s Al?”

“Not much. I finally got Amora registered in daycare so everything is ready. How about you? How is your schedule?”

“Not as busy as I thought it would be. But that’s okay, that gives some time to get a part time job.”

“I thought your parents were giving you an allowance?”

“They are but there’s some hot guys working at the call center. You should think about getting one there.”

Rhena was right. I should think about getting a part time job at the call center. I’m just walking distance from it too. My dad is giving me a small allowance, just enough to pay my half of the rent, food and things Amora needs. I could use the extra income. But I wonder if the daycare will still take Amora if I get a job.

“Yeah I should. I can apply tomorrow after class.”

When we got home, I notice there was the moving truck in the driveway. The new roommate was moving but who he or she was still a mystery. Boy was I in for a surprise.

I walked in to find my former friend Toni exiting from the kitchen. Her face nearly turned white when she saw me. We haven’t spoken since the end of our sophomore year in high school. I didn’t know what to say, having her living here isn’t ideal. Toni has no family, she’s one of the Second Chance Home kids, she has no one to turn to if I was to turn her away. Before I could say anything, Toni spoke.

“Ally.. I had no idea. Honestly I didn’t have a clue. I saw the ad and thought I got lucky finally. I almost thought I had to live in a tent if I couldn’t find a place in time. Just trying to get here was a hassle since the home was shut down. I had to work all summer just to get down here.”

“My uncle was vague about you. But I shoulda figured. Rhena told me how only 4 of you guys would be attending this school.”

“Yeah and trust me it was not easy trying to get here. I hope me living here won’t be an issue..”

“Maybe we should talk. Clear some things.”

“I agree.”

I wonder what sob story would Toni tell me now. I know she’s already trying to guilt me into letting her stay here since its been a hassle for her to move here from EC. But I would hear her out before I decide something.

“I wanna apologize about the whole Deshaun thing. It’s not what you think.”

“You dating the guy I liked and blowing me off wasn’t what I think? Wanna clear that up?”

“Well… Deshaun and I never dated… It was just a dumb rumor that was started when he asked me to tutor him. It was a rumor I wished that was true. I mean I was a nobody and the coolest guy in school was asking me to tutor him. I thought maybe him and I could be friends.”

“Why did you let me believe the rumor was true?”

“Cause I was embarrassed.. When I first heard the rumor, I thought Deshaun might actually like me. I heard that he secretly likes geeky girls. We started to hang out a lot so I thought he did like me until he told me about a girl he was seeing. I thought he was into me but I was nothing more than a friend. Plus you were the one who blew me off so I didn’t bother clearing things up. I was ashamed for even going after a guy that you liked.”

“I wish I knew the truth cause I hated you since. You should had been honest with me. We coulda still be friends now.”

“I know but I was just afraid.. and I felt stupid. No boy is worth ending our friendship over. Can we start over, maybe?”

“Now I know the truth, yeah. We can start over. We can be friends again.”

“I was wondering… Is your daughter really Deshaun’s? Word got around that you had a baby by him. I remember seeing you both go into that tree house. Is that were it happen?”

“Yeah.. It’s true. He’s Amora’s dad. And she was made in that tree house.”

“How was it?”

“How was what?”

“Sex. I mean how was the first time? Did it hurt?”

“You’re still a virgin?”

“Umm…yeah. No guy wanna be with me. I’m not all that cute.”

“There’s a guy out there for you. Trust me on this. We are in college in a new town after all.”

It was almost time for meet and greet. I dropped Amora at the daycare and went to the student with Toni. The others were already there and I was hoping to meet up with some of my professors for this semester.

I saw a familiar face in the crowd of my peers. It was Liz Tarry, a friend that I made back in Star City. I first met her when I attended one of the public schools in Star City before attending school in Sundale. She was one of my closest friends and our due dates were kinda close. We didn’t keep in touch once I started to attend school in Sundale during my senior year. I was happy to see Liz again and she was happy to see me again too.

“Hey Liz, how things been? How is your son doing? Do you have any pics of him?”

“Umm.. well.. I think he’s doing pretty well…”

“What do you mean you think?”

“Well… I gave him up. I just wasn’t ready to be a mom.”

“Oh.. I see. Maybe it’s for the best.”

“Yeah. So how about your daughter?”

“She’s doing great. She’s at the daycare. She likes it there.”

“That’s amazing that you brought her with you. I dunno if I would be here if I kept my son. He’s better off with the family who has him now.”

“I wasn’t sure about it at first but I got things figured for the first year. My parents are helping me out.”

“I stop having a parent when I got knocked up at 15. My mom still looks at me like I’m a piece of trash. She still wasn’t impressed that I got accepted here. But it’s whatever. I’m glad you still have parents who care about you.”

As I caught up with my friend Liz, I kept having the feeling that someone was watching me. I would glance over but I wouldn’t see anyone. Maybe I’m a bit nervous being around all these new people. Liz asked me if I was okay and I told her it was nothing but I just couldn’t shake off that feeling.

I did run into Rhena later on during the M&G. We didn’t talk long because she wanted to meet some of the other art students. Liz told me she was majoring in art so I figure I should introduce them to each other. Before I got to Rhena delivered me some unwelcoming news.

“Just a F.Y.I. I just saw Deshaun here. He asked about you and I’m pretty sure he’s looking for you. Unless you wanna avoid him, you may wanna head home now.”

“I do want avoid him but I don’t want to leave just yet. It’s only been an hour. I haven’t met any of my professors yet.”

“I’m just letting you know.”

“I know, thanks for the heads up.”

Ignoring Rhena’s warning, I met with one of my professors named Robert Richards. I made small talk with him not knowing that he was a bit curious about me. Apparently he knew a little bit about me. His sister taught at the college in EC where I took weekend computer classes when I was 15. His sister mention about me to him since I was one of her start students during that time.

“I saw your name on my list of students for this semester. I wonder if this was the same Alyssa Montigo which my sister spoke fondly about it a few years back. She wondered what ever happen to you. You didn’t enroll for the summer a couple of years back or since.”

“Wow I didn’t know I was worth mentioning. I was just a silly high school kid trying to build some extra  school credits. I gotten into some trouble during my sophomore year and I relocated to Starlight Bay until 2 weeks ago. Your sister is a fun professor. She really cared about her students.”

“Trouble? She always mention that you were a fairly good student. I hope whatever trouble you were in is long over. My sister said she saw great potential in you. You were more skilled in computer programming than her college students.”

“That part of my life is over. I’m back on top of things now. I plan to stay focus on my studies like I should back in high school. I promise that I won’t be a disappointed.”

“I think you’ll do just fine.”

I really hope so….

M&G was winding down a bit, I looked at the time and decided that I should head home. It was getting close to Amora’s bedtime. As I was heading to the staircase, I happened to spot Deshaun playing ping pong with a female. I felt my throat tighten when I saw his face, it’s been a long while since I last saw him. I didn’t send me anymore messages after I finally replied to his message.

I tried to scurry to the staircase but I was caught in Deshaun’s vision. “Hey Alyssa!” Deshaun called. He stopped in mid swing of his paddle before setting it down. I froze like a deer caught in headlights as he made his way towards me. My stomach started twist in knots, I felt my knees getting weak. I didn’t think he would still have this affect on me. I have a lot of dislike towards me, what’s wrong with me?

“I’ve been looking for you. I started to think you already went home. How have you been lately? I’m glad that you finally replied back to me.”

I wished that I already went home… Why didn’t I go before I had the chance?

“I’m just on my way home now. I would like to stay and chat but I gotta go.”

I lied.. No way I wanted to talk. I wanted to run but my legs just wouldn’t move.

“Really? Can we talk just for a bit? It is important seeing how we have a child together. I wanna know if I can meet her tomorrow after class.”

“I’ll think about it..”

“Where’s there to think about? I’m her father and as her father I have my rights to see my child. At some point you need to get over of what happen after the party. You can’t hold that over my head forever.”

“Excuse me? I need to get over it? Really? You don’t think that stunt you pulled was no big deal? You treated me as I were nothing the next day.”

“We were just dumb kids back then but now we are adults and we need to act like it. I want to do the responsible thing and you’re still holding a grudge against me like a high school girl. You think not letting me see her is hurting me. But it’s hurting her as well.”

“You couldn’t be anymore of an asshole if tried. My reasons aren’t because I don’t like you my reasons are that I’m afraid that you may hurt her like you did to me. You are flaky, Deshaun! That is one thing that concerns me about you. You act like things are perfect but the next day you get dismissive. So what if Amora pulls one of your dreadlocks. Is she not going to be your daughter anymore the next day? You say you wanna be her dad, be in her life. But I am afraid one day you’ll wake up and decided that you don’t want to be her father anymore. You say all the right things cause you think that you should but you never followed through. You shown me this with your actions. You changed your major twice before school has even started. Until you can prove to me you that you won’t flake out on fatherhood, I don’t want you anywhere near her. It’s gonna take more than the right words to convince me. You gotta show me and be genuine.”

Deshaun was in a lost for words. He couldn’t say anything cause he knew that I was right. I don’t think Deshaun is reliable and solid. He’s very charismatic, says the right things but it doesn’t mean it comes from the heart. As much as I want Amora to have both parents in her life, I can’t risk Deshaun hurting her later on. I don’t regret anything that I told Deshaun cause what I told him was the truth. The hard truth that he needs to hear.

Amora was happy to see me when I came to pick her up. Francis said Amora was wonderful and played nice with the other 3 kids. She especially played nice with a little boy named Pierre. She joked how he might be her little boyfriend. She already had dinner so I just have to give her a bath then off to bed we go.

I looked at Amora a little differently tonight. I can see a little bit of Deshaun in her. She has his pointy, her nose kinda looks like his. I never notice much of Deshaun in her until tonight. Maybe cause I chose to ignore it. As I bathed Amora I pondered if Amora will ever know him. Will Deshaun commit to being her father 100%? I guess time will time but I hope not too much time flies by before he decides. But for now, she has me. Someone she can fully rely on.

    • Yeah it would be important for Amora to have her dad in her life but he needs to have it together as well. Ally doesn’t want Amora to have a flaky parent like she did. Luckily Ash didn’t waste too much time before coming back into Ally’s life. She waited until her shit was together, so naturally Ally wants the same thing for her daughter as well.
